Why are we here? Why do we exist? What’s the meaning of life? The answer is far simpler than many allow it to be.
It’s for love and all about love.
We exist to love and to be loved. The meaning of life is found in loving.
If we are truly honest with ourselves, what is the thing every person really longs for? Love, acceptance, friendship, fellowship, connection with something or someone, to feel secure, to make a difference. Even at the core of every person, if we truly searched deep down, even those who are searching for fulfillment in all the right or the wrong places, what we’re deeply craving is true, unconditional love.
Yet the kind of loving is key. It is the love which is unconditional, which is only found one place and one way: All of these things, no matter which ones we long for, are answered in Christ alone. Only God can love unconditionally; only with God can we aim to do the same, though we most often cannot do so 100%. Without Him we can do nothing of any true good (John 15:4-5). God receives glory when we receive His love for us, and when we love Him and love ourselves and others as He loves us.
God is love (1 John 4:16).
There is a key here. It is not simply love. The true definition of love is God, and His definition of loving. It is not a feeling, it is a choice. God is love and love can only be defined on His terms, not our own. Our Creator made us for love: To know His love for us and to love Him in return, but in order to be love in return, it must be a choice of our wills to love Him and show this through living for Him.
In allowing You to love us and in loving in return, we grow to know You. It’s being loved by You, in loving You and knowing You, and loving as You love in the name of Your Son.
You actually call us Your beloved.
At this very moment, you may feel weak, have failings, or just dislike yourself, yet God says to you, “I love you. You are My beloved. Because I love you and because I say so—not by anything that is of yourself—you are worthy of love; worthy of My love regardless of your past, your present, or how you feel about yourself.”
He made you so that He could love you: To love you and be loved by you.
Feeling as if you lack love for Him in return? Do not fret, do not fear. As He loves you and you allow Him to love you, love for Him will well up inside you stronger and stronger as time passes by. Even if some days it feels less than before, know that God is working in you and He is enabling you even to love Him as He loves you.
He made you to love you–for relationship, for community, communion, fellowship—to walk and talk together in the cool of the day like He did with Adam before the fall of man into sin. We were not made for the fallenness that has entered our nature; we were made for Him, we were made for God, we were made for relationship and connection to Another; we were made to be loved and to love. After all, we are called “be-loved” – His beloved.
And when the fall came, and we could no longer fellowship with God as He Himself desired us to–to be loved by Him and to love Him—He sent His only Son in the likeness of human flesh, to make the way for us again. Jesus made the way through His sacrifice, taking the very sin of all the world upon Himself, that we could again have unbroken and unhindered fellowship with God. To love and to be loved by Him…
To walk and talk and commune and connect heart-to-heart again in the garden of the Secret Place… We were made for love – to love You and be loved by You, God, and You made the way. So we come.
My prayer for all who read this is from Ephesians 1:17-19:
May the Father of glory give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in knowing Him, opening the eyes of your hearts to the hope of His calling, to the glorious riches of His inheritance in His people, and the surpassing greatness of His power toward those who believe. May you know Him from the day of calling upon Him in salvation to more deeply knowing Him every day.
May you encounter His unconditional love for you and may your heart be alive in that love. May every chain of hindrance be broken off that would keep you from experiencing His immeasurable love for you. And may you know Him and the secrets of His heart as His friend and beloved whom He so loves, because He does love you so—far more than any other, and His love never changes. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
