There is a preciousness to be discovered in rising early to be with the Lord. I know it’s not for everyone, but personally I’ve found this to be the best time to spend with Jesus. Before anything else holds me back, I have to awaken my day by spending time with the One who never slumbers nor sleeps.
I do recommend mornings for this time though. Why? Because it’s probably your quietest time of day. Our homes are quiet for once and few cars break the silence in passing by. If you’re up early enough, even the birds have yet to sing and the sun yet to rise.
The Lord looks forward to the moment we awaken each day, just to be with us. As we set aside time with Jesus, we declare His worth compared to everything else in our lives.
God’s Word speaks of seeking Him early and this speaks of being intentional in seeking Him. Though morning is probably most people’s best time to pray and meet with the Lord, “early” could also imply going to God first before anyone or anything else.
“O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.”
Psalms 63:1 (NKJV)
Again, if you can wake before the others in your home and meet with God then, do it! It will help to do this rather than jump into the day’s chores, errands and tasks.
So if you’re able, slip out of bed and into His presence. Awaken the dawn by meeting with God first thing each day. Try to do as little as possible prior to meeting with God. I usually only make coffee or tea. In contrast, others may find getting dressed or a shower helps.
And because this is the greatest struggle for me, I’ll also add this: Don’t grab your phone until after you meet with God! Eep. Help me, Lord!
Surprise! I wasn’t thrilled when my husband’s work schedule changed and I found myself having to set a 4:30AM alarm to ensure my alone time with God was not missed. It turned out that I seemed to do best at this time, to my great surprise! Now I cherish these times.
When the world is quiet, we awake and still our souls before the One who knows and loves us fully. We seek His heart and grow in knowing Him more deeply, by His Spirit and through His Word.
It takes discipline. But it is of the most rewarding kind. This might even sound harsh, but it helps: Set your daily appointment with God and keep it; no exceptions, interruptions or changes to that schedule (at least, as much as possible of course!)
Ready the coffee and your journal, tablet and Bible and awaken the dawn with your heart set on the King. Now expect the Garden of your heart to grow even more beautiful!
“O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn.”
Psalms 108:1-2 (NKJV)
Is morning your go to time with the Lord? Whether it’s morning or another time, what’s your strategy for spending focused time with God?
