There is a preciousness to be discovered in rising early to be with the Lord. I’ve found this to be the best time to spend with Jesus. Before anything else holds me back, I awaken the day to be with this One who never slumbers nor sleeps.
It is probably your quietest time of day. The birds have yet to sing, the sun yet to rise. Our homes are quiet and few cars break the silence in passing by.
The Lord looks forward to the moment we awaken each day, just to be with us. As we set aside time to open our souls to Jesus, we declare His worth into the atmosphere of our lives.
We must be intentional. God’s Word speaks of seeking Him early. When we do not, daily tasks can steal away this time.
“O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.” – Psalms 63:1 (NKJV)
Anyone can do it. I encourage even those who do not see themselves as early risers to try giving that time to the Lord by waking earlier.
I personally seek to give enough time to engage with the Lord, which can take a bit longer as our bodies awaken more fully.
Out of bed and into His presence. Awaken the dawn by meeting with God first thing each day. Try to do as little as possible prior to meeting with God. I usually only make coffee or tea. In contrast, others may find getting dressed or a shower helps.
Personally these tasks tend to point me into thoughts of my day instead of into God’s heart, so I wait until after my time with Him.
Surprise! I wasn’t thrilled when my husband’s work schedule changed and I found myself having to set a 4:30AM alarm to ensure my alone time with God was not missed. It turned out that I seemed to do best at this time, to my great surprise! Now I cherish these times.
When the world is quiet, we awake and still our souls before the One who knows and loves us fully. We seek His heart and grow in knowing Him more deeply, by His Spirit and through His Word.
It takes discipline. But it is of the most rewarding kind. This might even sound harsh, but it helps: Set your daily appointment with God and keep it; no exceptions, interruptions or changes to that schedule as much as possible.
Ready the coffee and your journal, tablet and Bible and awaken the dawn with your heart set on the King. Now expect the Garden of your heart to grow even more beautiful!
“O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn.” – Psalms 108:1-2 (NKJV)
Would you join me, and countless others, as we awaken the day with Jesus?
