Perhaps you’ve experienced seasons where you were feeling very little, or even nothing at all, in your walk with God. You may even feel this way now: numb, empty and wondering why.
I’ve been in such a season myself and most likely every disciple of Christ has experienced such frustrations.
It’s important to remember that we do not base our faith on feelings; however, maybe like me it concerns you that you are feeling nothing.
Once while experiencing this myself, exciting things were on the horizon for the ministry where we were serving. Despite this, I felt numb. As I prayed about this, something came to mind that changed my perspective regarding that season of seeming numbness.
An Answer
God seemed to answer me in the thought that came: Feeling nothing can actually be beneficial. You’re probably shaking your head, but keep reading and you’ll see why: Instead of causing discouragement, a lack of emotion is like a clear canvas awaiting a masterpiece.
With no emotions of our own in the way, we can surrender to God, allowing Him to reign in us. As we pray, we can ask Him to give us His thoughts which are better than ours. We can seek to know His ways as we study the Scriptures. Through His Word, our thoughts can be replaced with His–our minds being renewed to know God’s will (Romans 12:1-2).
None of this is dependent on us feeling anything, and this is a good thing. Instead we stand on the firm foundation of His truth, believing that He is faithful to His promises regardless of whether we feel like He is or not.
Seasons where we feel little or nothing are an opportunity to grow. We learn to surrender our need to lean on anything outside of the truths in God’s Word when we need assurance. Then He can give us that which is higher than our own thoughts and feelings–His (Isaiah 55:7-9). We cease relying on our own feelings and understanding, and instead learn to trust Him with all of our hearts.
Remember this promise from God’s Word:
“Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.”
