Effective Prayer: Praying God’s Word by His Spirit

One of my passions is prayer and helping others grow in prayer. I want to share two keys to effective prayer.

There are many resources such as prayer journals to help us pray more. But with these resources in hand, how do we pray effectively? How do we engage in prayer that is also enjoyable? After all, a simple “save Richard” or “help Susie not to doubt” gets repetitive and even boring after awhile. We want to pray specifically and with our hearts all in.

Beyond any other tool, our greatest resources for prayer are God’s Spirit and God’s Word.

We must pray in agreement with God. We want to avoid praying our own opinions, agendas or ideas. Instead, we must follow the leadership of God’s Spirit and seek His Word.

It says in 1 John 5:14-15 that we have confidence in God if we ask according to His will. We can actually know that He hears our prayers and that He will answer them. So how can we learn to pray His will? Continue reading

Seven Free Apps for Your Walk with God

We seem to spend a lot of time on our phones or tablets these days. We grab our phones to check the weather forecast only to realize several minutes later our focus has been hijacked. Suddenly we realize we’ve been scrolling Instagram and lost track of time. We may have even forgotten to check the weather at all!

Installing apps to help our spiritual life may seem like a stretch, but this can be an incentive to spend some time with God, in prayer or in the Bible rather than browsing the web or Facebook. But how?

Instead of vegging on social media or Youtube, we can go for our Bible app or another spiritual app when we grab for our phones. Then we can redeem the time by giving that time to Jesus and our spiritual growth instead.

Tip: “Hide” the apps that distract you most! Put them in folders or on a home screen view several swipes away. Then move a faith app or two to the first screen you see instead.

Below are seven free apps I have used and recommend for your walk with God.

The Search for a Godly Definition of Success

The winds of the world’s ideas of success swirl around us: the pressure to create and to do, to earn more, to be productive, to be successful. People and families alike have definitions of what it means to be successful: major in that field, get that job, be married by xx age and having children.

When we accomplish only some of these things or feel led by God down a different path, people may deem us unsuccessful or misguided, even pressuring us to do something different. Or perhaps we’ve walked those paths and feel disillusioned by the result. Even the world around us is filled with calls to find our niche, push for popularity, make a six-figure income, hustle unto productivity and more, and it’s everywhere!

How we define success in life is crucial. It affects the trajectory of our entire lives and even colors our moods, mindsets and attitudes. How we define success affects everything! Nonetheless, we who are disciples of Christ should be seeking to walk out our journey with God in His ways of success.

How should a disciple of Christ pursue success? What defines success for those endeavoring to live a godly life? And in discovering a godly definition of success, what should we do to achieve it?

Let’s aim to define success God’s way. Below are three keys to a godly definition of success. Continue reading

Why We Do What We Do

How often do we search our hearts with the help of the Holy Spirit, seeking to know why we do what we do? Take the time, ask Him to shine the Light of His refining torch into your soul.

The things we do, do we do them to fulfill a need within us or because of wanting to share the love of God with others? For most of us, the answer will be both at times.

Each of us has longings. We all ache at times and seek to numb the pain through activity. We all experience emptiness that fuels what we do as we desire to be filled.

Christ wants to fill the emptiness. He wants to satisfy the ravenous wants we have as human beings. But it requires that we face the pain of not numbing ourselves.

We have to surrender the mindless actions we often undertake, such as repeatedly checking Facebook, sleeping away the day, or binge-watching the next new TV series. It requires that we cease doing things, even serving people, to try to grab onto anything to make us feel whole.

How often do we engage in activity for the sake of self over truly giving form an overflow of God’s love? At the least, we all love imperfectly. Each of us will be perfected in His love season by season as we grow in relationship with the Lord.

So what is Jesus wanting to work within us?

People of Intimacy with Christ

You and I are called to be people of intimacy with God. We were made for a close relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Though distractions abound, we are not alone: God’s Spirit is our Help.

The Lord is our first love and He loves us extravagantly. Despite life’s challenges, our pursuit is this: be rooted in relationship with Jesus.

John 15:5 says that without Jesus, we can do nothing.  Outside of relationship with God, you and I do nothing of true significance:

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” (John 15:4 NKJV

Fruit trees exist to bring forth a harvest of delicious fruit. But this can only come with the right location, water, and nutrients.

What ingredients are needed for our intimate relationship with God?

  1. Friendship with Jesus (the right location)
  2. God’s Holy Spirit (the water)
  3. God’s Word (the nutrients)
